Ceilings with Personality

A painted ceiling can have an amazing affect on a room. It can make it look larger, deeper, higher. A designer ceiling adds interest and a shot of personality to an otherwise plain room. My suggestion - if your home has high ceilings and your lighting fixtures are stand-out features, go for it - paint or wallpaper away! If you have low ceilings with a scattering of down lights (or 'fairy lights' as I like to call them) I'd be careful of colour and pattern choice - it may over power your room. Check out some inspiration below. Many are practical, livable options, the second last image reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel is perhaps a little over-kill, no?

A painted-on ceiling rose looks just as effective and not a permanent as the plaster versions. I do believe that ceiling roses like these are available as a stencil kit.

The graphic print to this ceiling really adds depth to this bedroom. The colour choice is complimentary to the turquoise-flavoured walls and really adds some personality to this room.

A little bit of sunshine added to a nursery room with a feature pendant light really brightens this room up. 



This wall-papered ceiling adds some grandeur to this babies room. Very masculine and again with the feature pendant lights.

The pistachio-coloured checked ceiling adds a country charm to this kitchen and is anchored beautifully with the island bench of the same colour.

A papered wall and ceiling in a charcoal base with gold floral print is a bold choice. There is a lot of natural light coming into this room so the dark colour works. The white architraves and window frames help lighten the area too.

A little over-the-top, but I had to add this to show that it really does work in this room. The ultra-high ceilings, whimsical colour palette and vintage decor collection blends perfectly with the 'cherub in the clouds' mural. The room is only small, but is able to handle this painted ceiling.

I love how the designers of this room have embraced the partitioned ceiling, each section bearing it's own stencil pattern. Gorgeous, soft colour with a lace effect and a complimentary chandelier complete the look perfectly.

Designer Spotlight

One of my most favourite interior designers is the wonderful Johnathan Adler, who by the way began his career as a potter, yes a clay spinning potter, many years ago and has developed into a creative genius of the interiors kind.
In my own words, he loves utilising colour, pattern, bold furnishings and a out-there features in every room and yet creates homely, livable spaces. I love the way he mixes unpredictable colour and pattern combinations and makes them work.
In his words, his signature style is "happy chic" which is a "prescription for anti-depressive living". I love it, we should all design and live this way.
