Designer Spotlight : Jan Kath Floor Art

Jan Kath is a young, multi-award winning carpet designer. Combining traditional prints with contemporary design, Jan Kath has created some of the most amazing rugs or 'floor art' as they are referred.

A German based company, they "link the traditional handicrafts of the Himalayas with modern, almost minimalist design. A synthesis which leads to extraordinary pieces. The secret of the aesthetic refinement of the carpets lies in clarity of design and skillful use of traditional know-how: the use of exclusively hand-spun and hand-carded wool produces carpets which often play with the richness of nuances of a single colour, called the 'abrash'. In this way, masterworks full of harmony and simplicity are created - each piece is unique."

"The basic material of all the collections is Tibetan Highland Wool - one of the best quality and most robust types of wool in the world. In order to guarantee the best quality, the wool is prepared step by step in his own workshop and coloured with high quality Swiss dyes to make it ready to the months of handiwork. Environmentally friendly, socially responsible - no child labour. The majority of the carpets are then finished in Switzerland."

ERASED CLASSICS Collection: Motifs from Italian wall-coverings and Indian saris inspired this award winning collection. The patterns are obscured, corroded and almost electrified. 'These programmed errors are what make the carpet so inspired and alive." says Kath.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Collection : Inspired by traditional shawls and headscarfes worn by Russian women in rural areas, this opulent collection boasts a bold, floral motif. The patterns are created using rich colours of Tibetan Highland wool and Chinese silk making each a powerful piece of art.  

RADI DELUXE Collection : One of Kath's most successful collections. Long and brightly coloured tassels create a unique edge.

SLICED Collection : Inspired by cross-sections of precious stone including emerald, hematite, quartz and agate each piece combines Tibetan wool with a high percentage of silk.

TAGGED Collection : A century-old knotting technique is combined with modern hand-tufting technology. Each piece showcases edgy slogans in a graffiti style font "Make Rugs, Not War' and 'This Is A Rug Revolution'.

THE BIDJAR TRILOGY Collection : Reinvented from an original floral design from North-west Persia in a vibrant, contemporary palette, the carpets are knotted by hand over a series of months using hand-spun Tibetan wool, silk and stinging-nettle fibre.
